Lions add wide-9 guru Jim Washburn to Defense

Jim Washburn will add experience
along the Lions defensive Line.
Jim Schwartz shot down the possibility of moving to a base 3-4 defense on Monday, and followed it up the next day by hiring Jim Washburn, one of the top proponents of the wide-9 defense that the Lions run.

According to many reports, Washburn will join the Lions defensive staff though it is not clear if he'll take over the defensive line that has been occupied by Kris Kocurek.

Washburn's defensive line in 2011 led the league with 51 sacks, and had been with the Titans for 12 seasons, 8 of those were with Schwartz as the Defensive Coordinator. Last season the Lions finished 20th in sacks tallying 34, after finishing in the top ten the previous season (41).

Another side note, newly promoted Offensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn, Jim's son, may have been a key factor in his decision to come to Detroit.
